Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. - Sigma Delta chapter welcomed their Spring 2021 Line of five new members on March 8, 2021. Recognized as the first African-American sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 15, 1908 at Howard University. The Sigma Delta Chapter was chartered at Oregon State University and the University of Oregon on April 30, 2000. Alpha Kappa Alpha's new members join the OSU's National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) community which includes: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
The five new members of the Sigma Delta chapter are Alexsis Kerekes, Makayla Agnew, Niya Mack, Riana Jerkins, and Sydney Kelly. When asked what being a member of AKA means to her, Jyhreh Johnson, chapter president, shared "Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated to me means sisterhood, commitment, and love. Through this organization, I have been able to find not only find my community on campus at the University of Oregon but have also been able to find a welcoming community at Oregon State University. AKA has taught me that through commitment and service you will be able to bring love wherever you go. These are my life sisters and I couldn't imagine being a part of any other organization."
Niya Mack, an Oregon State new member, shared, "Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated to me means sisterhood, elegance, and black excellence. I am surrounded by like-minded ladies who carry themselves with such poise and success. We are always striving to serve our communities and make everyone feel welcome. I chose the Sigma Delta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated to be able to serve the Black communities of OSU and UO."
